As I look forward to the start of my teaching career, I know that the success of my classroom and academic success of my students is dependent upon a well-developed and well-executed management plan. Classroom management is a vital tool that is necessary for every student’s academic success. My ideal classroom will be supported by two overarching ideas that will provide a learning environment for students to academically thrive in but provide a nurturing environment that supports positive character development.
The first overarching idea can be summed up with the word structure. Structure is the main component that aids in learning as it provides a strong and stable tool that is used to provide an environment where every student can succeed academically. Structure in my classroom will be characterized by an organized and orderly learning environment that will minimize wasted time, classroom rules developed by my students and I that gives each student ownership of their learning environment, routines that promote smooth transitions and maximize time on learning tasks, and classroom jobs that require student participation to maintain their learning environment. By having a structured classroom, students will have the necessary support that promotes academic success and provides them with the opportunity to take ownership of their role in that success.
The second overarching idea supports students as individuals and recognizes that their character is still developing. I believe it is important that students feel valued and comfortable enough to be themselves, to include making mistakes. I would like to nurture a learning environment where the student’s character is being developed in a positive manner, where they can safely make mistakes and learn how to correct them, where they will have a voice that is heard and considered, and where they can have a positive influence on those around them.
